This is wonderful! I also have been looking at all the spiral galaxies being released in the news. Just truly amazing to see in our lifetime…one a billion light years away.

Wonderful indeed! And to help deepen the wonder, another space telescope (Euclid) arrived at L2 in early August this year, joining JWST and Gaia. (See relative orbits here).

Whereas JWST takes high res images of particular targets, and Gaia is mapping the nearest few billion STARS (1% of the Milky Way), the Euclid mission involves surveying a few billion GALAXIES across 1/3 of the sky.

Meanwhile back on Earth, two monster telescopes are taking shape:

Giant Magellan Telescope (status, August 2022)

Extremely Large Telescope (status, July 2023)
